Save money and cut energy use

Until recently, Network Packet Brokers usually sat as standalone platforms feeding data to security and monitoring devices. This arrangement has always worked well and will continue to do so for a variety of applications.

However, an exciting new advancement from our colleagues in the Ixia division of Keysight enables the running of various security and monitoring sensors on Keysight’s Vision 400 and Vision Edge 1S Network Packet Brokers.

There will of course always be circumstances that require physical separation between Network Packet Brokers and the security and monitoring tools they feed data to, but this development is ideal if you need to add sensors but are short on rack space, you want to reduce the amount of power and cooling in your environment, or indeed don’t wish to purchase a new server for hosting the sensor software.

Which sensors can run on Keysight Network Packet Brokers?

Enabled by AppFusion – Keysight’s Application Integration Program – the following vendor sensors can run on Keysight’s Vision 400 Network Packet Brokers:

  • Instrumentix xMetrics – actionable insights on trend analysis
  • Forescout eyeInspect – OT asset intel and threat detection
  • Nozomi Guardian – OT asset visibility and monitoring

ExtraHop Discovery & Trace (Ethernet capture & troubleshooting) are available on Keysight’s Vision Edge 1S Network Packet Broker.

Security sensors we anticipate being available later this year include:

  • Armis – cyber exposure platform
  • Corelight – network detection & response
  • Darktrace – network detection & response
  • Dragos – OT asset intel and threat detection
  • Trellix – zero day threat protection

Monitoring sensors we anticipate being available later this year include:

  • Endace – packet capture & storage
  • LiveAction – network performance monitoring
  • Riverbed – network performance monitoring

This is great news for our Keysight Vision 400 and Vision Edge 1S customers, as well as anyone considering any of the above security or monitoring sensors – as you will of course require the means to connect them to your network.

In a nutshell, a Network Packet Broker is a device that takes a copy of your network traffic, strips out duplicates (and anything else that isn’t required,) and presents just the desired traffic to your security and monitoring tools adapted to the speeds and formats they can accept.

The intelligent conditioning of network traffic optimises your security and monitoring tools – empowering them to resolve problems quickly and efficiently. It also helps you to continue using lower speed tools when you upgrade to higher speed networks – which saves time and money – IE: using 1G security and monitoring tools on a 10G network.

Anyone upgrading their security or monitoring capability should consider using a Network Packet Broker as the means to resiliently connect the security or monitoring device to the network.
